Restaurant Safety for General Industry Online Course Description: Restaurant Safety for General Industry online safety course, developed by industry specialists, is intended to provide general safety and health information for those workers and supervisors engaged in restaurant and food service activities. This includes full-service restaurants, casual dining eateries and other eating and drinking establishments. This course also references OSHA’s new Globally Harmonized System (GHS) requirements that include the new Safety Data Sheets and Pictograms.
Intended Audience: This Restaurant Safety 101 online course is intended for workers in the restaurant and food service industry principally covered by OSHA’s General Industry standards. This includes:
- Managers and Supervisors
- Servers
- Chefs, Cooks and Food Preparers/Preppers
- Bus Persons
- Custodians
- Maintenance Personnel
- Cashiers
- Bartenders
- Dishwashers
- Other restaurant and food service personnel
NOTE: It is also applicable to other workers that may have the opportunity to support the restaurant and food preparation industry during deliveries, maintenance, and similar activities.
Learning Aids: Upon completion, the student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of restaurant safety and health hazards and safe work practices surrounding: Slips/Trips and Falls; Cuts and Lacerations; Burns from hot surfaces and chemicals; Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); Hazard Communication (e.g. chemical safety); Bloodborne Pathogens; Back Injury Prevention and Safe Materials Handling; Ladder Safety and more.

Features and Benefits: Restaurant Safety 101 online safety course will, in part, satisfy the general requirements for the OSHA General Industry standards mandating general and unique job activity, safety and health training. The General Industry Standards can be found in Title 29, Code of Federal Regulations and/or state equivalent (which are oftentimes stricter) standards. Combined with on-site specific training (e.g. site and company specific information on the hazards unique to a restaurant or food preparation facility and appropriate protocols), students can be confident that they have largely met OSHA’s training requirements for restaurant and food preparation safety and health.
