Respirator Qualitative Fit Test

Respirator Qualitative Fit Test Description: A pass/fail fit test to assess the adequacy of respirator fit that relies on the individual’s response to the test agent. Qualitative Fit Testing may only be used to fit test negative pressure APRs that must achieve a fit factor or 100 or less. A respiratory fit test is needed to determine the proper match between the facepiece of the respirator and the face of the user.

Note: OSHA requires employees that are exposed to a concentration of an airborne

contaminant that would be hazardous to their safety or health, to use respiratory protection and pass a respirator fit test before use of a respirator.

Who Should Attend: Required for employees who use respirators for protection from atmospheric hazards initially and annually.

Important Considerations

Medical Certificate Requirements: Participants must bring their current Medical Certificate for Respirator Use which they will have received after completing a Medical Questionnaire or Evaluation. Should you need assistance with medical clearance we recommend that you contact your local occupational medicine clinic or visit  3M Online Respirator Medical Evaluation.

Personal Respirator Requirements:  Participants must bring their own respirator for fit testing. Respirator sharing is not permissible under the law. Please ensure respirators are clean and in like new condition with no damage. If we will be conducting an initial respirator fit test the employer will need to provide a supply of respirators in all sizes & P100 cartridges for each respirator.

Respirator Seal Requirements: The test shall not be conducted if there is any hair growth between the skin and the facepiece sealing surface, such as stubble beard growth, beard, mustache, or sideburns which cross the respirator sealing surface. If the participant currently has regular facial hair growth, they will need to be clean shaven prior to prepare for fit test.

Personal Protective Equipment: Fit test should be performed while the participant is wearing safety equipment that may could interfere with respirator fit during actual respirator use. We recommend participants bring their other personal protective equipment including hard hat, eye wear, face shield, welding hood, spray sock, coveralls, etc.

Testing Time: Approximately 30 minutes per participant. We will be covering a great deal of information in a short period of time; your punctuality will be greatly appreciated.

Pricing:
Open Enrollment Participant Pricing: $55.00 ea.
Scheduled Groups with minimum of 8 Participants Pricing: $50.00 ea.
Association Member Participant Pricing: $45.00 ea.
Retainer Client Participant Pricing: $10.00 ea.
Note: Failure to prepare, or fit test failure will not result in prorated pricing.

Respirator Quantitative Fit Test

Respirator Quantitative Fit Test Description: An assessment of the adequacy of respirator fit by numerically measuring the amount of leakage into the respirator. Equipment is used to measure the concentration of a substance in ambient air to the concentration inside the respirator when worn. A respiratory fit test is needed to determine the proper match between the facepiece of the respirator and the face of the user.

Note: OSHA requires employees that are exposed to a concentration of an airborne contaminant that would be hazardous to their safety or health, to use respiratory protection and pass a respirator fit test before use of a respirator.

Who Should Attend: Required for employees who use respirators for protection from atmospheric hazards initially and annually.

Note: We are prepared to conduct quantitative respirator fit testing on 3M and North manufactured reusable half-mask or full-face respirators.  Any other brand of respirator must be indicated by Make & Model of the respirator prior to scheduling to ensure we have the correct adaptor for the TSI PortaCount.

Respiratory Protection

Respiratory Protection User Course Description: In depth presentation discussion on when and why a respirator is necessary; types of respirators; and what each type can and cannot do to protect the wearer. Demonstration of proper use of the respirator includes inspecting, putting on and removing, checking the seals, maintenance, and storage of the respirator.

This training can be a part of OSHA required respiratory protection user training and generally does not cover the additional worksite specific training requirements. If worksite or policy specific requirements are provided in writing to Northwest Safety in advance they can be included.

Note: OSHA requires employees be medically evaluated, fit tested, and properly instructed in the selection, use, and maintenance of respirators before allowed to use respiratory protection.

Who Should Attend: Required for employees who use respirators for protection from atmospheric hazards initially and annually.

Important Considerations

Completion Requirements: Participants are required to be present and actively participate in all learning activities including hands-on exercises, written exam, and practical evaluation. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a certification.

Learning Aids: Participants should come prepared with a note pad and pen. Guides and handouts will be provided at the start of the course. The presentation and materials are in English (Spanish courses are available upon request).

Course Length: Approximately 2 hours including classroom theory and activities. We will be covering a great deal of information in a short period of time; your punctuality will be greatly appreciated.

Respiratory Protection Medical Evaluation

Respiratory Protection Medical Evaluation Description: A respirator medical evaluation is a health assessment that determines if an employee is medically fit to wear a respirator.  Also known as a respirator medical clearance, the evaluation helps to identify potential hazards of respirator use for the individual prior to use. to the protect the respirator user.

Medical evaluations are needed to prevent injuries and illnesses that can arise from respirator use. Clinical studies show that even positive pressure respirator use can be harmful. Respirator use of all kinds and types can cause alterations in breathing patterns, hypoventilation, retention of carbon dioxide, and an increase in workload on the body. Employees that use any respirators including respirators such as air supplied positive pressure face masks or hoods should have a medical evaluation before use.

The results of the respirator medical evaluation can help employers make informed decisions about which employees can use respirators under specific environmental conditions and physical demands. Some medical conditions can make it difficult for an employee to wear a respirator at work. By having a respiratory protection program, conducting respirator medical evaluations and fit testing it guarantees workplace compliance with respiratory protection standards established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Who Should Receive a Medical Evaluation: OSHA requires the employer to provide an initial and as frequent as annual medical evaluation to determine that the employee's ability to use a respirator, before the employee is fit tested or required to use the respirator in the workplace. Completion of a respiratory medical evaluation questionnaire by the employee and review by the licensed health care professional, which may include follow-up visit with the licensed health care professional if necessary.
